As one year ends and another begins, it’s the perfect moment to pause, reflect, and appreciate the important role that AwayCare travel medical insurance products play in supporting travellers and brokers alike. Taking time to review and truly understand these policies now helps ensure that travellers receive the support and protection they expect—when they need it most.

At AwayCare, our mission isn’t just about selling insurance. It’s about equipping brokers with the knowledge and confidence to guide clients through the complexities of international and domestic travel coverage. Whether you’re new to the industry or an experienced advisor seeking a refresher, AwayCare Broker Support is here to help every step of the way.

Broker Support: Your Partner in Success

AwayCare’s broker support team offers guidance, training, and ongoing assistance to support brokers in their day-to-day operations. From product features to best-practice tips, our goal is to make your job easier and your client conversations more effective. Let’s start with a quick refresher on two cornerstone products that continue to be essential for travellers and their advisors.

True North Visitor to Canada Plan

This plan is designed for travellers who do not have valid provincial health coverage and are coming to Canada.

  • Applying for a travel visa can be a lengthy and fluid process, so policy dates must be monitored closely by brokers. Policies that take effect without timely notice of delayed travel may not be eligible for a refund.
  • If a visitor does not arrive in Canada on or before the policy’s effective date, the policy dates must be amended. Benefits begin on the effective date, so it’s critical that the policy does not start until the visitor is physically in Canada.

Brokers are encouraged to monitor policies closely and, when making the sale, emphasize to clients the importance of informing you if their travel dates shift. Staying proactive keeps both you and your clients on the right track.

Senior Guard Out of Province Emergency Medical Plan

Senior Guard is an excellent option for Canadians with valid provincial health coverage who are travelling outside their home province or country.

  • Senior Guard offers flexible stability options, ranging from 365 days to as low as 7 days.
  • Clients can purchase this coverage up to nine months in advance, which allows brokers to lock in pricing before birthday rate adjustments or typical increases that occur in the fall.
  • Medical questions on the application are based on the client’s health at the date of application and the 12 months prior. If a health change occurs after the application is processed but before departure, the medical questionnaire does not need to be amended. In many cases, you can simply offer the client a reduced stability option at no additional charge for the newly disclosed condition—only the reduced stability fee applies.
  • There is also flexibility for date changes before departure, giving both brokers and clients peace of mind as travel plans evolve.
